Building houses is arguably one of the hardest things to do in The Sims 4. There are a lot of options to choose from for your design, so I am here to break it down into simpler parts.
STEP ONE: THE OUTER WALLS
The first thing you need to do to build a house in The Sims 4 is place your OUTER walls. These walls will be the framework of the outside of your house. Press B on your keyboard to use the wall-placing tool. After placing your walls in the shape and height you would like, click on your lowest walls and use the tool that looks like an arrow pointing up and down to raise your foundation (drag it up to make the foundation higher.) After you create your outer walls and raise your foundation to your preferred height, go on to the next step.
STEP TWO: PORCHES AND DECKS
The next step in the process of building a house is building your porches and decks. To do this, build walls in the shape of your decks/porches and then use the fence tool to replace them with fences. This way, they will be on your foundation. Next, use the sledgehammer tool to delete any overhanging roofs (as you can see above, I left one hanging on the back deck, which I have since deleted) and delete where you want your stairs up to the decks/porches to be. The final part of this step is to add your stairs and stair railings where you deleted parts of your fencing. When you are done, move on to the next step.
STEP THREE: ADDING SIDEWALKS AND PLANTS
Every house needs some extra touches such as sidewalks and plants. Simply use the floor pattern tools and select your preferred sidewalk, and place it where you want it. Then, get some plants if you would like and place them to liven up your house. When you're done, go to the next step.
STEP FOUR: COLORING THE OUTSIDE OF YOUR HOUSE
Now that you have the basic outer pattern of your house complete, it's time to color it! Start by using the foundation tool (NOT the foundation RAISING tool) to choose what your foundation looks like. Next, use the Floor Patterns tool to add color to your porches and decks. Finally, use the Wall Patterns tool to color the outer walls. When you're done, do the next step.
STEP FIVE: ADDING ANY OUTSIDE OBJECTS
You have almost completed the outside of your house. The next step is to add any objects (like benches, grills etc.) to your decks, porches, and yard. I recommend starting by adding a couple of benches of your choice to the front porch. Next, I would add at least one outdoor table (and chairs) and a grill to your back deck (and maybe a trash can). Also, add some stuff to your upper deck if you have one. Finally, I would add a garden, pool or other activity to your yard.
STEP SIX: ADDING DOORS, INNER WALLS AND INNER STAIRS
Now it's time to begin working on the inside of the house, and continue working on the outside. First, add your outside doors (the ones that can be seen from the outside.) Next is the tricky part. You need to design the rooms of your house. Using the Wall-Placing tool (press B again), place the walls you want on the inside of your house to form rooms. Once you have built your rooms, add the stairs that connect your lower floor to your upper floor, and any other stairs you may need (Note: Don't forget to add stair railings! Also, you may place a fence around the top of the stairs for extra aesthetics.) Finally, add any doors to the rooms you created in your house. Then, move on to the next step.
STEP SEVEN: ADDING WINDOWS AND CEILING LAMPS
Now your house needs sources of lighting. You will start by placing windows. Place windows anywhere you'd like on the OUTSIDE of your house. Also make sure that the windows you want to use are the appropriate height for your walls. After you have placed your windows, you then need to choose ceiling lamps to illuminate your house. If you just want a basic, bright light, then I recommend The Subtle Saucer Light. Place the lights all around your ceiling until your house is as illuminated as you like. Once you are done, move on to step eight.
STEP EIGHT: ADDING FLOOR AND WALL PATTERNS TO THE INSIDE
Now that you can see the inside of your house, it is time to add the floor and wall patterns. Start by adding your preferred tile floor to the kitchen and all bathrooms. Next, add carpet or wood to all bedrooms. Finally, add wood to the rest of the house. Now you need to add wall patterns. I recommend any kind of paint, but wallpaper is also fine. Once you have applied your wall patterns, continue to step nine.
STEP NINE: BUILDING THE KITCHEN
At this point, most of the frame of your house should be complete. That means it's time to start adding stuff! Start with the kitchen. Place counters, a refrigerator, a stove, a dishwasher, a sink, a microwave, cabinets, a trash can, and maybe even add things like a coffee pot, a tea maker, an island or a bar. Once you have laid out everything for your kitchen, move on!
STEP TEN: BUILDING THE LIVING ROOM
The living room is a necessity to any good house. Place a rug, TV, TV stand, coffee table(s), sofa(s), and at least one floor lamp, and maybe even some art on the walls for extra aesthetic, and you're good to go!
STEP ELEVEN: BUILDING THE BATHROOMS
Every house needs a bathroom. Place a shower/tub, a toilet, a sink, a mirror and a trash can, and feel free to add extras such as a bath rug/mat, towels, or even a toilet paper holder. Once you're done with all bathrooms, move on to step twelve.
STEP TWELVE: BUILDING THE BEDROOMS
Building the bedrooms is one of the most important parts of making any house! Place a bed (of course), nightstands, lamps, a dresser, and a mirror, and maybe even add stuff like a fish bowl, bookshelves, or other things. It's all up to you! Once you're finished with all bedrooms, move on to step thirteen (or skip to step seventeen if you don't want any of the additional rooms.)
STEP THIRTEEN: BUILDING AN OFFICE (Optional)
To build an office, place desks, desk chairs, computers, a trash can, and some wall art.
STEP FOURTEEN: BUILDING A FITNESS ROOM (Optional)
To build a fitness room, just put some exercise equipment in it (and maybe a TV)!
STEP FIFTEEN: BUILDING A LIBRARY (Optional)
To build a library, place a rug or two, some bookshelves, some floor lamps and some living chairs. STEP SIXTEEN: BUILDING A DINING ROOM (Optional)
To finish your final room, the dining room, place a dining table or two, some dining chairs, a flower or other decoration on the dining table(s), a couple of hutches, and some wall art.
STEP SEVENTEEN: ADDING THE ROOF AND FINISHING THE HOUSE
You've made it to the last step, I'm proud of you! Now it's time to finish the house! Start by adding extra stuff to overly empty spaces, such as hallways (add a bench or something). Next, review your house to make sure every room is in order. If they all are, then it's time to add the roof! Find the roof that you want and place it. If a roof is not the shape you want, try placing multiple roofs of different shapes until you get what you want! Once you have placed the roof, make sure the new walls created by some roofs match the rest of the house (for example, gabled roofs will add new walls. Color these the same as the rest of the house.) After you do this, it's time to color the roof and add any other things, such as roof trims and roof sculptures (and maybe columns depending on your porch)! Start by coloring the roof with the roof pattern of your choosing. Next, add a roof trim if you'd like. Also, if you need to, add columns to support overhanging roofs (such as roofs covering porches.) Once you are done with those things, add a mailbox and a garbage can. Next, look over your house and add anything else you think it needs. Finally, to finish the house, go to the panel on the left upper corner of your screen, name your house, add lot traits and list how many beds and baths.
Congratulations! You finished the house! The only thing left to do is move Sims into the house and revel in your accomplishments. I hope you liked my tutorial! Also, feel free to comment any questions you may have below. Thanks for reading!
